List of universities in Pakistan

At the time of independence, Pakistan had only one university, Punjab University which is one of the largest in Pakistan and the oldest in South Asia. By the time the amount of universities has increased. In 1997 Pakistan had 35 universities including public, private and military universities. Now Pakistan has more than 200 universities in different provinces and capital.

Higher education in Pakistan undergoes a very positive change and development in several years. Multiple universities, for instance, NUST, PIEAS, University of Karachi have achieved a place in the top world universities ranking. Also, the higher education commission (HEC) which is responsible for higher education in Pakistan ranked the universities based on specific quality education criteria. HEC has signed DOU (Document of Understanding) and MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with several foreign universities including UK, TURKEY, CANADA, GERMANY, USA, SOUTH KOREA and many others for scholarship opportunities for students.
