“If patchy hair or going bald really bothers you, the hair transplant procedure is often a method to feel more confident about your looks as it will ensure natural looks. But it is necessary to discuss with your doctor about what you can expect during and after the surgery.” Says Dr. Deepesh Goyal who is known for the best hair transplant in Jaipur.

What Is a Hair Transplant?

“It’s a sort of surgery that moves hair you have already got to fill an area with thin or no hair. Doctors are doing these transplants since the 1950s, but with the advancement in medical science techniques have changed alot in recent years.” Says Dr. Ankur Singhal who is one of the best hair
transplant surgeon in India
.

You usually have the procedure within the doctor’s office. First, the surgeon cleans your scalp and injects anesthetic medicine to numb the backside of your head. Your doctor will choose one among two methods for the transplant: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction
(FUE).

With FUSS which is also known as FUT, the surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of your head. They set the strip aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is instantly hidden by the hair around it.

Next, the surgeon’s team divides the strip of removed scalp into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with a single hair follicle or simply a couple of hair follicles. The amount and sort of graft you get depends on your hair type, quality, color, and therefore the size of the bald area where you’re
getting the transplant.

If you’re getting the FUE procedure, the surgeon’s team will shave the backside of your scalp. Then, the doctor will remove hair follicles one by one from there with a punch tool. The donor area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover.

After that point, both procedures are similar. After they prepare the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will go, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places each graft in one among the holes. They’ll probably get help from other team members to
plant the grafts based on the quantity to be transplanted as it is a time taking process.

Depending on the dimensions of the transplant you’re getting, the method will take about 4 to 8 hours to complete. you would possibly need another procedure afterward if you still lose hair or decide to have thicker hair.

Expectations and Recovery

After the surgery, your scalp could also be very sensitive & tender. You’ll got to take pain medications for several days. Your surgeon might ask you to wear bandages over your scalp for a minimum of one day or two. They’ll also prescribe an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medicine for you to take for several days. Most people can get back to their regular life 2 to 5 days after the operation.

Within 2 to three weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but you will start to note new growth within a couple of months. Most of the people will see 60% of latest hair growth after 6 to 9 months. Some surgeons prescribe the hair-growing drug minoxidil (Rogaine) or other medicines to enhance hair growth after transplantation, but it’s not clear how well it works.

Risks and Costs of Treatment

The price of a hair transplant will depend on various factors such as transplant method, location, hair density, surgeon’s experience, etc. Majorly the cost depends on the quantity of hair you’re moving, but it generally ranges from Rs. 30000 to Rs. 150000. Most insurance plans don’t cover it
as it is a cosmetic surgery procedure. However, we recommend to discuss with your insurance agency for the same.

As with any other type of surgery, hair transplant surgery also have some risks, including bleeding and infection. There’s also the chance for scarring and unnatural-looking new hair growth if not done by an experienced & properly trained hair transplant surgeon.

When the new hairs start to grow, some people have inflammation or an infection of the hair follicles, called folliculitis. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines can relieve the matter. There are also chances of sudden hair loss, called shock loss. But most of the time, it’s no permanent & the hair will grow back soon.

Talk together with your doctor about these risks and also about your expectations from the surgery. They will assist you to decide if it is a good option for you.
