The 6 Steps of the Water Purification Process

  1. Collection, Screening, and Straining

The source water for an urban surface water treatment plant is generally a local river, lake, or water storage pool. A chain of large pumps and channels is mostly used to deliver the water to the treatment plant. Later it is transferred to the treatment facilities.

If we talk about surface water sources, you know they involve carrying lots of suspended and dissolved substances. This substance may contain smells, microorganisms, fishes, trees, garbage, etc. The substance may be organic or inorganic and differ in size.

The initial procedure in typical whole water treatment purification is to examine or strain out the more oversized materials. Large materials are caught on the screen as the water flows through it. These screens must be cleaned off regularly

2.Chemical Addition

The pre-screened water is collected into the treatment plant. Different chemicals are added to prepare the floating particles in the water pile together to create a more massive gelatinous particle, generally named floc.

Several different chemicals are used in this procedure, often called coagulants. One of the most popular that has been used for a long time is aluminum sulfate or alum. Whichever coagulant or a mixture of coagulants is used, they must be blended very well with the water before they can create an enormous floc.

3. Coagulation and Flocculation

A speedy blend unit is commonly used to mix the coagulant into the water to give a high-speed and extensive mixing. The water mixing speed is then slowed to enable the water to connect with the forming floc and let it expand in size.

Adding a chemical to result in the suspended material to “clump” into bigger particles is named flocculation or coagulation. Whereas the treatment unit for it is called, the “flocculate.”

4.Sedimentation and Clarification

After the flocculation, the water flows over the weir in the flocculator and floats to the middle of the clarifier or sedimentation chamber. From here, the water moves towards the sawtooth weir at the boundary of the unit. As the water moves towards the weir, the massive floc particles are supposed to settle out to the clarifier’s core.

The water from the weir is collected and sent to the filters. The purpose clarification occurs before filtration, so the bulk of suspended material can be wiped out before filtration, which prevents overfilling the filters.

5.FiltrationAnd Disinfecting

Clarified water reaches the filters from the height. Gravity drains the water down through the filters, assembled in a drain system at the bottom of the unit. In renovation ideas, water treatment has a special value

After the filtration process, it is as clean as it can get. Still, there may be bacteria residing. To ensure these are eliminated, there must be a disinfection technique performed.

6.Storage And Distribution

After the disinfection process, there is a way in which water is stored. Storage of water usually takes place in an underground storage tank for distribution purpose called a “clear well.”

The stored water is pushed through underground pipelines all over a town called a “distribution system.”

Conclusion

Water is the basic need for all living creatures. If we consume dirty water, it’ll cause several diseases. So that’s why it is crucial to hire a water treatment specialist to avoid drinking bacteria, viruses, and water.
