The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the biggest health challenges faced by the global human community. So far, the novel strain of Coronavirus has infected more than 1.8 crore people and led to more than 7 lakh deaths all around the world (as per the World Health Organisation; 6th August 2020). Moreover, it has leveraged the whole world with a massive economic slowdown as countries were forced to implement nationwide lockdowns for several months.

Nevertheless, agitation induced by the disease has also evoked the importance of a strong immune system among the global population. WHO asserts that though the disease is cureless, it is preventable and mild symptoms can be alleviated with self-care. However, recovery and prevention are largely dependent on one’s immune system. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, enhancing the body’s natural defence system, i.e. immunity can play a vital role in safeguarding one’s health. For instance, the ministry has also issued important guidelines for boosting immunity with the power of Ayurveda.

Sadly, people tend to believe in a host of myths and misconceptions with respect to their immune system. This can create major problems, especially during emergency situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some of the most common myths associated with the immune system that you should immediately stop believing:

Sleeping routine has no effect on the immune system

A popular myth asserts that having an inappropriate sleeping routine does not affect the immune system. However, health experts believe that sleep and immunity share a strong link. For instance, an adult person needs at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep, teens need at least 9 to 10 hours of sleep, and school going kids need at least 10 hours of sound sleep for sustaining a strong immune system.

Exercising has no effect on immunity

A study asserts that exercising can change the antibodies and white blood cells (WBCs) in the body. It initiates rapid circulation of antibodies and WBCs that can help in detecting illnesses earlier. However, a direct connection between the two is yet to be established.

Supplements can make people feel better – faster

The consumption of pharmaceutical products like multivitamin supplements can improve people’s health, in case they are susceptible to poor diet. However, taking extended amounts of a single vitamin supplement may not work effectively in strengthening the immune system. Moreover, people should also ensure that they take supplements manufactured by the top pharmaceutical companies only.

Children need supplements for a good immune system

Children in growing age require vitamins and minerals for a healthy body. However, it is always better if their nutritional requirements are fulfilled through proper food and diet. Health experts believe that though supplements are helpful, they are still drugs and can behave adversely.

Conclusion

A strong immune system creates a barrier to stop antigens and other invaders from entering inside the body. In case these antigens and other invaders manage to cross the barrier, the immune system produces white blood cells, proteins, and other chemicals in order to attack and destroy such substances. Thus, it is important for people to avail information from credible sources only as believing and implementing on myths can lead to serious problems.
